| FAQ |
Being online is a trip on the information highway ... traffic whizzing by and lanes crowded ... publishers and users often paying little attention to what comes and goes. CLICK HERE for an example of what is meant by publishers paying little attention ... typically resulting in dead ends. Another cause is publishers abandoning webpages. There was little that could be done, except to print corrections on more paper, when that was entirely the medium for publishing contact directories. It would seem that the Internet might have eliminated the situation of coming upon incorrect contact data. That's not the case, however. Webpages are too often published and information on them left as is. Some publishers, although well well-intentioned, more or less walk away from their work. It's like mowing the lawn once so that it looks good, thinking that you'll never have to that again. At one time there was a now defunct organization known as the International Development Research Council. Its association manager published a resource and service provider directory online, leaving it unchanged for years ... an excellent example for making the point in the above paragraph. For specifics and how the directory relates to the .network mission, CLICK HERE. Take a look at three things that users of The Network need to know. Doing so makes it clear that you and others users should expect to find reliable contact data readily available when searching its global directory of contacts as well as various accessible outside directories. Also, look over a summary of what actions .network users can take to overcome dead ends. Why do you prefer that I send an email identifying a location rather than who I am? The Network is a open
access resource that its user
group has available to search for places
of interest throughout the world. We (who
we are), therefore, are attempting to list as many locations as
possible. We prefer that you send us a location
identity for a place that you would like to see listed,
for example, in the Area
Development section of the Economic Development Network website.
The exception to this preference would be if
you are qualified to be a resource
supplier or service provider with an interest in
participating in our
mission CLICK HERE to send an email that identifies a location for free listing in The Network. Do you help with facilities location projects? Absolutely! The focus of The Network is on helping at start where it's important to find and build relationships with resource and service providers as well as to collect location data. Why isn't all information from the Global Registry of Contacts published online? Contact data are networking information ... resources subject to continuous change as anyone with experience in using or publishing a directory knows. Contact directories become outdated no sooner than they are published. Something is always changing with any fixed list of active contacts, such as those in position to serve are members of the .network user group. There are three things about using The Network that members of the example group need to know. The demands placed on the Global Registry of Contacts within the context of those three things forces a challenge to maintain it as dynamic as possible. The prudent choice for The Network is to publish essential items of information online from the GRC that are least likely to change, the first being the name of the contact. Two other informational items that facilitate searching and need to be published are the identities of the contact's employer and location. For more about these three items published online from the GRC, CLICK HERE. A unique search promise makes the GRC work. It is an offer of free personal search assistance. It reaches into the GRC to retrieve contact data, for example. Meeting the challenge of publishing a contact directory online with a promise, affords the opportunity to check to see if something about contact data has become outdated. You have the best chance of avoiding a dead end search. The promise affords you the additional benefit of having assistance available when you search, but do not readily find, resource suppliers or service providers that you know should be participants in the mission of The Network. Does your database list locations and contacts that furnish information about them? We maintain a database known as the Global Registry of Contacts. The information published online from the GRC is organized alphabetically by location (example). Since the names of locations are words that begin with capital letters, we provide a special tool for searching. The answer to the question above has more information about searching for locations. Also, Site Location Assistance.com lists locations. CLICK HERE to search inside that website. We offer personal search assistance as a free service no matter how you choose to proceed. Does The Network freely provide access to contact directories other than its own? Yes. The definition of contact
directory in the Enterprise
and Economic Development Glossary points to those accessible through
US
/ Economic Development Directories in Site
Location Assistance.com as examples. The Network provides
access to other directories listing resource
and service providers engaged enterprise
and economic development. The Economic
Development Section of the .network library
lists www.ecodevdirectory.com, for example. Is The Network controlled or influenced by a special interest group? The Network is controlled by one individual who has freely provided it as a online information service since 1996. You could say that .network operations are influenced by members of its user group. They are targeted as a group because of their special interest. Although members of the group don't pay fees or purchase services to enter .network websites or use its resources, the position influence is the same as if they were customers. The Network it is absolutely dedicated to listening to the voice of the customer. Occasionally questions are asked about who pays for .network operations: CLICK HERE for an answer.
