Since that time, however, the world has been stuck with deplorable icons of the down-trodden worker. The factory system shamefully exploited workers. Wages were low and hours long. Working conditions were bad and often unsafe. Children were made to work while being deprived of an education that would allow them to move on from being unskilled laborers throughout the rest of their lives. Efforts of workers to organize against their their exploiters were often met with force, but in many places and to varying degrees they gradually made progress — at a price! Since the time of the Industrial Revolution millions have been freed from bondage. Technology has brought about things that ordinary people could not have imagined in the beginning. On the other hand, millions of people have needlessly died, their communities and economies destroyed. Nonrenewable resources have been lost from our environment. Uprisings of workers that at first brought hope and change for the better eventually fell into the hands of politicians and leaders motivated by greed and selfish gain. Overtime many organizations of workers simply became short-sighted institutions for short-term gain. So the plight of the downtrodden continues. But, the work never ends.
