Business Dictionary.com offers a definition of wage as well as one for wages. When considering production factors, wages means the cost of the use of labor by an enterprise, as opposed to its use of capital or property.

Wages are are affected by the availability of workers to fill jobs which, in turn, are affected by the availability of enterprise management and production methods as well as tools, machines, and places of work.

Wage earners as employees may earn their pay working by the hour, day or week on a regularly scheduled basis. Those who do piecework may also be wage earners. Workers are paid at different wage levels based on various factors such as skill level or experience, or what the market will bare, i.e. based on supply and demand. A wage level, AKA wage scale, a schedule of average pay to workers doing specific jobs in an area taking into account performance of related tasks or services as well as supply and demand.

Area and local development representatives often survey job categories and wage levels in order to provide the information to prospects. Wage survey may appear as a data category at the websites and location profiles of places seeking enoomic development.
