address string:

... a linear structure presentation of the access protocol, domain name, and file or resource path which is normally used to specify the address of a web page, image, or other document online; a URL laid out in a straight line and referred to as a URL address string or Web address string. For example, the following URL address string is where you find an answer to the question: What is an address string:?

http://www.findmehere.com/search/dictionary/berners-lee.htm#addstring

String as a metaphor for a line has been in use so so long that it is part of the word's definition in most dictionaries; i.e., a string is something configured as a relatively long line. Information seen as marking a specific destination shown in linear fashion may be referred to as an address string, for example: 10822 Big Canoe, Jasper, Georgia 30143 USA.

URL is an acronym for Universal Resource Locator. It is commonly used in making non-technical explanations of strings that computers use to locate specific places on the World Wide Web at their unique addresses, for example, the webistes of The Network.

URL along with URN (Uniform Resource Name) are both protocol schemes of URI (Universal Resource Identifier) which, according to what The Network sometimes refers to as the Berners-Lee Glossary, is ... the string that is used to identify anything on the Web (source of quote). The URI, along with its URL and URN subsets, are most often identified by the less technical recognizing the http://, ftp://, mailto: protocols in a string.

URI is likely to be used by technical purist — All URIs are means to access a resource on the Internet and are technical short hand used to link to the resource (source of quote). Internet users who are not technical purist seem to more readily embrace URL.

More explanation of the URL acronym in use today in a W3C document titled, URIs, URLs, and URNs: Clarifications and Recommendations 1.0 (especially, read the second paragraph of 1.2 Contemporary View). W3C website: http://www.w3.org (a address string that can be copied to your browser and used to connected to the place online that is the W3C website location. In other words it is an example of a URL or web address as well an online location. W3.org is the website of The World Wide Web Consortium, an organization that develops standards. One of its leaders is Tim Berners-Lee whose Weaving the Web Glossary has been a .network resource for years.

A domain name extension follows the final dot in a URL address string. It is the URL address string suffix which technically comes after the domain name and makes it complete to the point that it is fully qualified. Examples of domain name extensions are shown below beginning with dot net which is used to establish the top-level domain of the Economic Development Network: http://www.economicdevelopment.net

SOA.com offers a definition of top-level domain. The following address string shows more information: http://www.w3.org/People/Berners-Lee/Weaving/glossary.html (the information after dot org takes you to a webpage created with Hypertext Markup Language < select this link to see a definition of HTML). If you add the destination anchor, #domainname, that takes you directly to a definition of domain name in the HTML document after passing through three files of the W3C website (W3C home).

Examples of domain name extensions:
.net = network
.com = organizations as commercial enterprises
.org = organizations as nonprofit enterprises
.edu = educational institutions
.gov = government
