target audience:

a specific group of consumers identified for a marketing initiative; a market segment; a part of a population (target population) for which some type of information distribution is intended or to which some effort to gain attention is directed; that which is zeroed in on as a demographic; a group selected for contact; a group selected to communicate with.

Marketing research seeks to profile potential purchasers of products or services—profiling is part of the targeting process. Market research is also part of the overall process, however, it is somewhat different. Marketing Planet.com explains the difference between the two (market research versus marketing research).

This glossary's definition of target explains target audience in terms of enterprise and economic development. Audience, which refers to listeners or viewers gathered together, can be analogous to users, for example, analogous to the .network core user group.
