As an expression that originated with the food and pharmaceutical industries, this definition of shelf life is an extrapolation for online meaning. Just as food is prepared, placed on a shelf, and removed at later because it may no longer be edible, it's analogous to point out that some information should only be left online for limited time. Information should be removed when it becomes misleading or is no longer useful to anyone.
