search variable:

a changeable search feature; an item placed in a search box such as a text line; instructions given to a search tool prompting it to provide one or more search results.

Writers of computer programs that become search tools embed variables for outside data input. For example, the glossary search program shown employs Boolean Logic. The tool's programmer put in fixed variables so that non-programmers have a range of flexibility to change searches. The pull-down menus available with the following search tool also provide a non-programmer with search alterability.
