quality initiative:

. . . a procedure introduced into a process for purposes of maintaining or improving properties, attributes, characteristics, or features of what it produces to the satisfaction of a set of specifications or as required by purchasers. See the definition of production quality.

Quality initiatives are mainly associated with manufacturing. Quality manufacturing refers to the application of standards throughout processes of manufacturing industry so that production can be predictably uniform. Parts and units output consistently meet specifications as methods of quality control or quality management are applied. Results might be referred to as lean manufacturing or other enterprise initiatives identified as lean.

The International Organization for Standardization (www.iso.org/iso/about.htm) defines quality as the . . . totality of features and characteristics of a product or service that bears its ability to satisfy stated or implied needs (source of quote). The Pinnacle Partners Quality Glossary provides information about ISO certification. PPI also defines quality.

Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, TX, provides information about quality stating that it's a more complicated term than it appears (source of quote).
