a field of endeavor for which one qualifies to be compensated for providing services typically based on credentials reflecting academic preparation. Professional certification is provided in several ways, such recognition by a trade association or professional body. Certain professional practices are licensed by Government agencies. Professionals, such paid sports performers, are set apart from amateurs. Professionals, such as certified economic development practitioners, are set apart from those who simply have experience, such as volunteer area and local development representatives.

Professionalism implies adherence to a set of standards of methodology, expertise, performance, and ethics. Wikipedia has an article about professional conduct.
