Websites focused on free access information resources rather than those that are meant for use by shoppers often work with different categories. There is no clear separation between the two. Commercial online directories use as many information categories as possible to draw the attention of their target audiences and gain maximum exposure for advertisers.

... something published or otherwise produced as a resource that contains information categorized for referencing convenience. For computer users the definition of directories refers to lists of files in electronic storage as well as descriptions of various characteristics of files , such as layouts of fields in databases. Directories containing alphabetical or classified listing of names and addresses as well as other contact data of specific persons, groups, or organizations are distinguished from the preceding definitions—they are contact directories.

Online contact directories are important to The Network, given that its mission is to put people together. Free and open access is provided to many contact directories in support or (who we are) mission, including the Global Registry of Contacts. The database for GRC information published online contains contact data that is freely available to .network users. The GRC database fits the computer science definition of directory in the above paragraph.
