occupation:

. . . an endeavor that is a regular source of livelihood, especially one for which a person is particularly suited or qualified, in which case an occupation is the work for securing the necessities of life that keeps one occupied; i.e., an occupation is a vocation.

An endeavor other than that of working for a livelihood, such as a hobby, is an avocation which also fits the definition of occupation.

Working at an occupation as a source of livelihood a person is, more or less, on the job, i.e., a person in a workforce who holds or posses a job.
