networking: ... the event of a purposeful information exchange intended to bring about a relationship; the process of interacting with contacts in order to develop or sustain relationships, as in business networking; the basis for organizing a networking event which is defined as an exchange of information and development of one or more contacts at a specific time and place. One definition of networking states its interaction or engagement ... in informal communication with others for mutual assistance or support. (source of quote). Use of the word informality in the quote raises the question of whether business networking should be casual, personal, and amicable. The question is addressed in Eight Essentials for Successful Networking from the standpoint of building and maintaining friendly relationships. Savvy networkers are aware and attentive to prevailing event-guidelines of a specific groups. They have a sense of knowing when networking is strictly business and traditions are to be observed. Networking is also a computer science term that refers the process of systematically interconnecting equipment and/or services. related: network; personal
