manufacturing: ... the process of making something from raw materials and/or pre-manufactured parts (see interchangeable parts); to manufacture in, for example, a factory, job shop, flow shop, or manufacturing plant, especially with the use of industrial tools and machines. The manufacturing process is work of a mechanical nature utilizing a division of labor through which raw or partly wrought materials flow to the point that a functional and/or acceptable product is ready to be introduced into commerce. Manufacturing is the industrial process of making something through segmented tasks. The work comes together as production. The term manufacture and trade identifies the sector of an economy made up of manufacturing enterprises in combination with those engaged in distribution. Together they make up a system of conveyance of products to customers as well as consumers; i.e., industrial enterprises produce for supply chains that feed markets. Manufacturing facilities are real property fitted for production. They may be large factories or small shops. Machine shops are manufacturing facilities. Facilities are also available buildings that can be retrofitted to accommodate manufacturing. Facilities location work is essentially the same process as site selection. Marketing places seeking economic development to manufacturers is typically referred to as industrial development. FYI: content="... definition of manufacturing" /> |
