location identity:

... information useful for finding a place on a map or in an atlas without including a specific address. For example, it may be a one-word name of a country or it may a a location identity string (see below) which is a combination of words and/or abbreviations arranged in a manner such that it guides in using a map or atlas with efficiency.

location identity string:

... linear layout of information that allows for an efficient way of finding a location on a map or listed in an atlas. It may be an ordered arrangement of names or a combination of words and abbreviations, for example, Atlanta, GA.

Location identity strings guides users of The Network in suggesting places or interest and places seeking economic development for free listings in its various site selection directories as well as the Global Registry of Contacts. The latter site selection resource is a global directory of location data suppliers. ... the addition of a hyperlink to the identity of a location (see the definition of location identity above) published on a webpage or to an accompanying text or graphic item. Places seeking economic development are listed in the Economic Development Network website with accompanying links so that users can obtain contact data for location data suppliers.
