lead:

a potential prospect about which information becomes known; a suspect; a target as a marketing, telemarketing, sales lead, etc. The recepient of a lead may choose to investigate further or to disregard it altogether, in which case it doesn't become a target.

Leads are exchanged through business networking—through ally networks. Lead lists are purchased through various data brokers or freely provided by cooperative associates

Enterprise development leads are generated (leads generation) through publications dedicated to site selection and economic development. They may be considered advertising leads that are qualified simply because their contact data is available. Qualified leads, however, require that more information be gathered through followup or investigation and networking. We (who we are) suggest that leads be qualified as prospects on three project levels—for more about project status levels, CLICK HERE.

Contact directories are used for generating leads by either gathering information directly about listings or by building relationships with selected listings for business networking. High quality marketing leads are developed through research and customer profiling.

Unqualified leads feed into unsophisticated marketing campaigns, for example, when sending out junk mail or telemarketing using automated dialing.
