Job security: ... an indication to an employee that the services provided to an employer will continue to be needed for the foreseeable future such that there is confidence about staying on the job. The term also refers to contractural assurancess (employment contracts, collective bargaining agreements) about job continuity, if not not commitments to specific employees (employment security). Contractural job security may have the force of political power, organized labor, and laws dealing with hiring, firing, laying off (layoff) or locking out (loakout) workers. A definition of employment states that it is ... a contract between two parties, one being the employer and the other being the employee (the quote is from a Wikipedia article)
Employment security essentially means the same thing, except employment suggests that employees will continue to work for the same employer although they may move from job to job, for example, by being promoted or by receiving assignment changes. Employment security suggests that employees who work under contract or those who are independent workers have the knowledge and skills that can keep them employed in their trade, occupation, or profession. In a free enterprise economy, one of the most important contributors to work security is hearing and understanding the voice of the customer. Individuals gain elevated levels of control over their worklife destiny by listening to customer speak. It would seem that the future of jobs provided by employers would depend upon the demand for the goods and services they provide as well as upon their willingness and/or ability to stay in business. It is necessary, however, to factor into both job and employment security the protective powers of governments and organizations such as labor unions. Government workers are often thought of in terms of having greater security than others because their jobs are not tied to customer satisfaction. In certain cases of employment security the factor of political connections applies. Likewise, in certain cases of keeping jobs in place without any connection to real work.
