job:

... an industrious or purposeful activity for which one is compensated; a regular activity within a trade, occupation, or profession that one performs as an employee; a task, chore or bit of work that must be done or is an assignment, duty or responsibility that must be carried out.

On the job means actively engaged in the work that one is hired to do or in which one is regularly employed. One may be on the job at a place of work or work station. The term at work implies that one is at the job site. i.e., the location at which one endeavors to be productive in accord with an obligation resulting from the process of being hired. Carrying out an obligation to do a job requires some level of skill in combination with a work ethic.

... the total number of job vacancies available for people seeking employment; the aggregate number and types of jobs that are available in a labor market. Job markets are events for job seekers to present themselves to employers and network for opportunities. They are also called job fairs. Job networks are organizations for job seekers who want to exchange leads and ideas.
