hit:

retrieval from a server as an incident recorded without enough information to track subsequent events; the initial encounter of a websurfer recorded simply to track website or web document (et cetera) activity. A hit is a single online interaction as indicated in a Wikipedia article about user interface (source of quote).

Selections of items from search results produces hits, thus serving the interest of those who tout website popularity without regard for whether or not visitors actually avail themselves of information or something of interest. See the definition of user.
