While they may be a logical or comprehensible arrangement of things for ordered retrieval, hard files are not stored electronically, though they may be on hard disks. Paper documents may come to mind, but a hard file can also contain things such as photographs, publications, and recordings on film, tape, disks, etc. The images shown below are recognizable as the way paper or plastic file folders looked before the computer came into use.
