focused interest group:

... a network with members having a common interest; a special interest group without the stigma of having a focus on lobbying or bringing political pressure for a cause that might be disagreeable to outsiders. Focused interest groups are involved in networking and sharing information and resources. As defined here, the term has nothing to do with focus groups.

Most definitions of focus group explain it in terms of participation in qualitative research. The term is familiar to those who are, for example, interested in marketing research. In that regard it is a group brought together to observe something related to a specific product or service. Members of a marketing focus group are typically asked to give their opinions perceptions, and observations. Their focus is controlled and when the exercise is finished the group is disbanded. Focus groups are not formed for networking.
