It is a place that houses factory workers on the job adding value to goods in process which, when finished, move into commerce as finished goods. Factory employees, machines and equipment are organized through enterprise development to be managed and controlled for the purpose of processing material into parts and fabricating them into something.

Factories are in the industrial sector of an economy which includes agricultural, construction, commercial fishing, forestry, as well as manufacturing facilities. They are identified with the Industrial Revolution. Wikipedia has a article about factories which shows an automobile production plant (manufacturing plant) with smokestacks.

Sometimes the word smokestacks is used as a slang reference to relatively old factories. The word conjers up concerns about their negative environmental impact. From the viewpoint of communities that once thrived with smokestacks, but have since lost them, lost jobs, and lost the potential for industrial development, there comes the realization that environmental impact is a tradeoff in the face of economic change.

The expression, chasing smokestacks, which is out of fashion today, was used at one time used to refer to what representatives of places seeking industrial development did to extend community vitality by sustaining enterprise and economic development.
