crossroads: ... a place, usually in a rural area, at which two or more roads cross; a crossroads community which is is an intersection where there are buildings and a small population—a crossroads village of a few houses and maybe a store or two; a crossroads town as a population center in a non-urban area that is extremely small by comparison to other communities. An crossroads in a rural area may have a store and dwelling for its owner but nothing more. In that case it would not qualify as a community. There may be other dwellings where people live nearby and the whole area identified locally as a community, which is often the case with a rural area known by the name for a store or building used as a gathering place at a crossroads. |
