continuous improvement:

. . . an enterprise management strategy as an ongoing effort, especially, applied for process improvement—and, applicable for product and services improvement as well.

Continuous improvement is a . . . subset of continual improvement, with a more specific focus on linear, incremental improvement within an existing process. Some practitioners also associate continuous improvement more closely with techniques of statistical process control (source of quote). A generalization, as related to continual improvement, might be to state that it is a constant pursuit of higher level performance excellence.

reengineering:

Like continuous improvement, reengineering is a process of enterprise development. Reengineering stems from the continual improvement philosophy of W. Edwards Deming, as do various other similar concepts, strategies, methods, and installations, focused on quality initiatives, pursuits-of-excellence and the like that can potentially change enterprises in terms of their organizations and cultures and well as their processes. The PPI Quality Glossary has a brief, generalized, definition of reengineering.

MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA) professor, Michael Hammer (1948–2008), proposed the reengineering concept in a magazine article. Following that was a publication of a book (beginning of the 1990s) titled Reengineering the Corporation, by Hammer and James Champy. That entered reengineering into the jargon of coaches, teachers, consultants and business decision makers focused on organization management strategization and change implementation.

Wikipedia has a business process reengineering article. Among other things, it traces reengineering development after 1995. Also, an article published online by San Diego State University, College of Education, San Diego, CA, review reengineering and critiques the positive and negative impact of implementations from the concept.

The magazine, Fast Company, has a James Champy interview (2011)

The New York Times Bits Blog has an article titled Re-Re-engineering the Corporation.
