In a more narrow sense of the term, intelligence refers here to data considered to be private once it is gathered, analyzed, and put to use within an enterprise. Within the enterprise such data is used to initiate or alter operational plans as well as develop strategies related to competition or profitability threats; i.e., this meaning of business intelligence, refers to information which competitors might like to know about in order gain an advantage or lay a block to a project. There the indication is that the computer is useful in dealing with business data. Business Dictionary.com also indicates that BI is an acronym for business intelligence. And, its definition ends with a reference to competitive intelligence.

The website, B2B International (subtitled: Market Research with Intelligence), points out that competitive intelligence is sometimes confused with market intelligence. An article at the website titled, Using Market Intelligence & Competitive Intelligence To Add Value To Your Business, provides a definition of competitive intelligence stating that it refers ... specifically to information about a particular company’s competitors. In effect, competitive intelligence is a specific type of market intelligence (source of quote). The quote seems, in effect, to infer that competitive intelligence as well as market intelligence (a part of market research) are covered under this .network glossary's definition of business intelligence.
