area:

the scope of a surface or portion of a space identified by a calculation of its extent, i.e., within boundaries. See a Wikipedia article about metes and bounds which mentions landmarks. A landmark, such as a prominent feature, is often used to casually identify an area, in which case its boundaries may be understood without exact calculation.

Wikipedia simply defines an area as a quantity that expresses the extent of a two-dimensional surface or shape in the plane. (source of quote).

See the definition of location identity as it applies to listings in the Global Registry of Contacts. Such locations fit the definition of areas for enterprise and economic development. Location identities in this case are analogous to areas pointed out by referring to prominent features, whereas, mailing addresses are analogous areas as specific locations, e.g., those defined by metes and bounds or similar exacting measure.

Among the people listings in the Global Registry of Contacts are area and local development representatives. They are listed among mission contacts of interest to .network users. With reference to context, in this case the word area refers to something that can be as large as, say, a global region or as small as a locale that makes up a local economy. Local refers to a particular place that is not widespread by comparison.
